SOFT PASTELS

If your base color appears especially streaky, try using a soft chalk pastel instead of the pastel pencil. Soft pastels blend more easily than pencils because they have less binder.

3Add Form

Begin adding form with the Brown Ochre pastel pencil, starting at the head and working your way down. Blend with a tortillion. Fill in the eyes with the Copper Beech pencil, and the nose with Gunmetal. Keep a sheet of tracing paper under your hand to prevent smudging.

4Add Detail to the Face

Add details to the eyes, nose and mouth with the Ivory Black pencil. Scratch out highlights with the craft knife. Blend the highlights with a little Chinese White. Add more details to the mouth with Copper Beech. Begin adding fur strokes with Raw Umber. Use firmer pressure for the darker strokes on the ears and around the muzzle.
